“Her color is good,” I heard Dan saying. “No bones broken.”

There was a sound of pines murmuring in a soft breeze, then footsteps on gravel. I concentrated on the wonderful business of breathing before slowly opening my eyes. Dan’s face hung over mine, and I realized I was lying on grass, my head in his lap.

“Mr. Tyler—” I began, my voice edging toward hysteria.

“It’s all right, sweetheart,” Dan said gently. “He has already been taken to the police station.”

“But the carbon—”

“You only got a whiff or two of carbon monoxide gas,” said another voice. A pair of gray pantlegs came into view. “Lucky thing,” Chief Amory continued, “you kept bugging me about the motor scooter or I might not have decided to come looking for it this afternoon, nor insisted that Tyler open his trunk when I found him here backing out of his garage.”

“The carbon sheets!” I struggled to a sitting position. When I’d explained, Amory said, “Even if we don’t find them, Tyler will have a tough time trying to tell a jury why he had you stuffed in the trunk of his car, a hose from the exhaust aimed at your nose.”

“My patient needs rest,” said Dan firmly.

“How did you get here?” I asked.

“As soon as my lawyer bailed me out, I came to the inn looking for you. One of the cottagers said she saw you heading for the Tyler place.”

Chief Amory was still staring down at me. “You get an idea you really ride it. Good quality for a policewoman. If you need a job, let me know.”

“Then my theory about Dan being set up for a patsy was right?”

“Don’t rub it in!” Chief Amory strode off.

“Persistence is a dandy quality for a doctor’s wife, too,” said Dan, helping me to my feet. “That is, if you don’t get yourself killed first. Maybe I’d better take immediate steps to prevent that.”

The soreness in my ribs and throat seemed to fade away. “We’ll cable my parents again and if we don’t hear right back, it’s their own darned fault. I can get a teaching job in Ann Arbor. We’ll find an apartment on campus—”

“You’re talking too much!” Dan bent toward me, his voice filled with tender laughter. “I can do something about that, too.”

He was so right.
